On Tuesday (9.8.16) a group of young students from Favela Phoenix were given the opportunity to visit the Olympics and see the boxing tournament. A fantastic day out also included a variety of sports activities for the kids to get involved with. Many thanks to Lucia Nayase, Isabelle Morais, Eliane Farias, Alexandre da Silva Santana, Sandra Teixeira, Arlete Florencio and Jody King for taking the students on this great day out!
A big thank you to our 4 amazing volunteers last night, Amy, Isabelle, Correntin and Julia.
We have so many children arriving on a Wednesday night that we have stolen another classroom next door to fit them all in! Favela Phoenix would like to send a special and very warm thanks to Amy Kerr who arrived in Rocinha from the UK in late June and stayed for six weeks. Whilst she was here she was a fantastic help for the school, especially with the new infants class. She loved her time here and it was a tearful farewell for her when she left in early August (just before the Olympics began!). We will miss her but she promises to return next year - looking forward to it. Thank you so much for your support Amy and for the support from your family back home.
On the 4th of July Favela Phoenix English School opened its doors to a younger generation of students. Two groups of children aged between 7 and 13 are now being taught by volunteers at the school. The classes are very popular with both the children and their parents and it is hoped that this will increase Favela Phoenix's profile within the community as well as setting a good grounding for future studies at FP for these young learners.
