On Tuesday (9.8.16) a group of young students from Favela Phoenix were given the opportunity to visit the Olympics and see the boxing tournament. A fantastic day out also included a variety of sports activities for the kids to get involved with. Many thanks to Lucia Nayase, Isabelle Morais, Eliane Farias, Alexandre da Silva Santana, Sandra Teixeira, Arlete Florencio and Jody King for taking the students on this great day out!

A big thank you to our 4 amazing volunteers last night, Amy, Isabelle, Correntin and Julia.
We have so many children arriving on a Wednesday night that we have stolen another classroom next door to fit them all in!

Favela Phoenix would like to send a special and very warm thanks to Amy Kerr who arrived in Rocinha from the UK in late June and stayed for six weeks. Whilst she was here she was a fantastic help for the school, especially with the new infants class. She loved her time here and it was a tearful farewell for her when she left in early August (just before the Olympics began!). We will miss her but she promises to return next year - looking forward to it. Thank you so much for your support Amy and for the support from your family back home.

On the 4th of July Favela Phoenix English School opened its doors to a younger generation of students. Two groups of children aged between 7 and 13 are now being taught by volunteers at the school. The classes are very popular with both the children and their parents and it is hoped that this will increase Favela Phoenix's profile within the community as well as setting a good grounding for future studies at FP for these young learners.

When he was younger Jody went to Budehaven School in Bude, Cornwall, UK.
In the May of this year a student at the school, Any Kerr, became interested in Jody’s project in the favela and ended up organising a fund-raising event in order to sponsor Favela Phoenix.
She arranged a “non-uniform day” where the students pay £1 each for the privilege of not wearing their school uniform. She also gave several talks, during school assemblies, about the education situation in the favelas and the way projects such as Favela Phoenix are doing all they can to help the communities in Rocinha, and elsewhere in Brazil.
Many thanks to Amy from all at Favela Phoenix for raising a total of £850 – a wonderful and much appreciated effort from someone who has not even visited a favela!
But all that is about to change when Amy visits Rocinha in July to see for herself the way the money is spent in our efforts to deliver an English education to Rocinha – also to see how the favela functions through Jody’s guided tours of the neighbourhood.
Again, many, many thanks to Amy - we look forward to welcoming you in July!
