When he was younger Jody went to Budehaven School in Bude, Cornwall, UK. In the May of this year a student at the school, Any Kerr, became interested in Jody’s project in the favela and ended up organising a fund-raising event in order to sponsor Favela Phoenix. She arranged a “non-uniform day” where the students pay £1 each for the privilege of not wearing their school uniform. She also gave several talks, during school assemblies, about the education situation in the favelas and the way projects such as Favela Phoenix are doing all they can to help the communities in Rocinha, and elsewhere in Brazil. Many thanks to Amy from all at Favela Phoenix for raising a total of £850 – a wonderful and much appreciated effort from someone who has not even visited a favela! But all that is about to change when Amy visits Rocinha in July to see for herself the way the money is spent in our efforts to deliver an English education to Rocinha – also to see how the favela functions through Jody’s guided tours of the neighbourhood. Again, many, many thanks to Amy - we look forward to welcoming you in July!
