The English School
"My name is Jody King. I am originally from England but came to Brazil three years ago to seek a new life in Rio de Janeiro.
I planned on teaching English as a foreign language in the city but instead I became a tour guide and resident in the largest favela in Brazil, Rocinha.
Money from the tours helps to fund Favela Phoenix.
I have been extremely welcomed into the favela by all residents here. Despite what the media portrays about the favelas I have always felt very safe inside them. The people are what make this community so special. I now have this neighborhood and its people in my heart.
Unfortunately the favela residents get very poorly educated, meaning they only ever get offered poor job opportunities. We decided to open an English school here in Rocinha after some careful thought about what would be most beneficial for the people here. With the ability to speak English, it will open up a lot more job opportunities for the residents of Rocinha.
Our English school project is something very much for people who are a lot less fortunate than myself, and indeed most people from 1st world countries. We have seen at first hand what small donations mean to these people and they are very appreciative. Putting smiles on their faces has become something of a blessing for us. We just want to positively impact as many lives here as possible. There is a famous Ghandi quotation, and it really inspired me, "be the change you want to see in the world". We want to see better education in Brazil's poorer communities, so we're going to try our hardest to change it for the better!"
