FAQ For Potential Donors
What does Favela Phoenix spend its donations on (where does my money go)?
General day-to-day running of the school and consumables such as printing paper and inks etc. But by far the bulk of our donations go towards the salaries for the teachers at Favela Phoenix. Remember that the cost of living in Brazil, and in the favelas in particular, is very low so even a small donation goes a long way.
Can I set up a regular donation to the charity?
Yes! We are not registered for Direct Debit but you can use the bank details to set up a Standing Order through your bank:
Acc. Name: Favela Phoenix
Bank: Barclays Bank
Sort Code: 20-04-59
Account Number: 43053067
Or you can click on the PayPal link on our homepage and follow the instructions for recurring donations.
Does Favela Phoenix collect Gift Aid?
Yes – whenever someone makes a donation or sponsors us we’ll ask if they’re eligible for Gift Aid (i.e. if they are a UK tax-payer). If they are and agree to claim Gift Aid, we’ll reclaim the Gift Aid from HMRC and it will be passed on to the charity in full. Gift Aid is the simple way to increase the size of your donation, and because it’s reclaimed from the Government it won’t cost you any extra.
What is Gift Aid?
The UK Government allows registered charities to claim back tax on donations. This tax relief is called ‘Gift Aid’. Gift Aid is great because it means charities get extra money added to their donations at no extra cost to the donor. For every £1 donated, the charity currently receives £1.25 when you add Gift Aid.
Can Companies and self-employed donate to Favela Phoenix?
Anyone from a company can make a donation or sponsor Favela Phoenix in the usual way and making their payment with a corporate credit or debit card or setting up a PayPal payment.
How do I hear about how Favela Phoenix is getting on (what difference my donation is making)?
The staff at Favela Phoenix will update the website regularly with news and photos from the school (achievements, activities etc) but we will also contact our regular sponsors with news and thanks as often as we can.
